Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for All Students

Lesson Resource Materials

I enjoy creating resource materials that support my student’s learning. Following are several samples of materials I created for math.

My Book of U.S. Coins

First, for our money math unit, I noticed that my students were struggling with coin identification. I created “My Book of U.S. Coins” as a way to reteach the coin characteristics. This book was also a resource that students kept in their desks for the remainder of the money math unit. It held them accountable because anytime a student asked me to identify a coin for them, I could point them to their U.S. coin book and encourage them to uncover the information for themselves.

Money Math Word Problems

The second grade standard for money math (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.7) says that students should be able to solve world problems involving money. However, the school’s math curriculum provided very little practice with word problems. I created this worksheet in order to help students move towards mastery of this standard.

Units of Time

I created this as a fun graphic organizer for students to use to understand different units of time and how they are related. Students in the class were highly engaged in the activities, and because it was modeled for students on a document camera, the lesson was well-scaffolded and it met the needs of all learners.

Understanding by Design:
Opinion Writing Unit

This opinion writing unit was created using the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework. This unit includes a 10-day learning plan, 3 stages of UbD, three detailed lesson plans, assessment rubrics, and resource materials I used when delivering the content. This unit successfully engaged all the learners in my clinical fieldwork classroom.

ELA/Science Lesson Plan

Here is an interdisciplinary lesson plan I created for students in my clinical practice. An important element of this lesson was for students to use a thinking map. We used a circle map to organize our ideas about penguin characteristics. We also annotated text as we read to help students highlight important information. Students took this learning and used it to complete a written paragraph for one section of a penguin report, which was part of a larger unit of learning. UDL strategies used in this lesson included clarifying vocabulary and symbols and supporting planning and strategy development.
